(a)   It shall be unlawful to install an inground lawn irrigation system directly connected to the city freshwater system without first making application to and receiving a permit from the city clerk, after approval by the chief building official or his or her authorized assistant. The application for such permit shall be made and the permit obtained before any installation work is commenced. A one-time fee of $25 shall be paid prior to obtaining the required permit.

(b)   No permit shall be required for making minor repairs to previously installed systems such as replacing sprinkler head or fixing minor leaks not directly associated with the connection to city water.

(c)   All new and previously installed operating lawn irrigation systems must have a backflow device as part of the system when connected to the city water supply. This backflow device is required to prevent contamination of the city freshwater system. An inspection verifying proper operation of the backflow device must be performed by a technician certified by the state of Kansas or Butler County. This inspection is required to be performed every two years, in even-numbered years (for example 2024, 2026 ...), no later than 1 July. Backflow device testing results must be filed with the city clerk by the testing technician. A $10 per month late fee will be assessed each month past the annual deadline until compliance is meet.
